See the words in the table below?

  • Employers LOVE these words! (We know this because they have been surveyed, like, a gazillion times!)
  • They LOVE these things in their employees … BECAUSE, if their employees have these things (we call ‘em QUALITIES), that will help them to make-money! Sweet!
  • They KINDA LIKE to see some of these words in resumes and letters too… (hint!)

Do you have any of these QUALITIES? If you do, make sure you smack ‘em somewhere in your letter or resume. AND, hawt tip, BOLD them. Score!

Ah yes, surveys, once again, have shown that Employers dream about the words in the table below, we call ‘em Employability Skills or Competencies (yike!).

  • A dictionary defines ‘competency‘ as: “an ability to do something, especially measured against a standard….Hmmm, fascinating-not!

If EMPLOYERS tell us that they want these skills in their workers – what are you going to do about it?

Obviousment:

  • You will jot down anything you feel is right for you, or download your own A4 checklist of Employability Skills and tick ‘em off.
  • That is not all, no siree, you will then plonk some of this stuff into your letter of application and resume.
  • Do-not-get-greedy, around 5 or 6 competencies is a good, and fair inclusion to your documents!
  • Can’t decide what is best? Easy… score each competency out of 10 (be totals honest) and pick the highest! Done!

impressiveDon’t have MEDIOCRE statements in your letter / resume… have muscular-dude-bring-it-on statements!

If you like ACTIVE VERBS (they are the words which bring sentences alive), you will find plenty of them (active verbs) in the example statements below.

If your VERBS are taking a nap, wake ‘em up by checking out the list here.

You can be as ACTIVE as you like with your VERBS, but you also have to add a fair dash of PURE-OLD-FASHIONED-HONESTY.

  • What?

Well… if you say you are excellent at something…. you had better BE excellent… Red cheeks all round if your future boss asks you to prove your statement… and you can’t!

The following will give you ideas for the work experience, part time work and volunteer section of your resume.

Skills & Abilities – In a Paragraph

OPTIONAL – MAP your Answers to the Employers ‘Needs’

Of course you can just use the examples on our Checklists “as is” in your resume. However, if you want to take it that one step further you can MAP your Answers to the Employers ‘Needs’.

For example if you have ticked “able to work without supervision” this could be matched (depending on the scenario) to the employers needs of “Reliability, Commitment & Common Sense“. So in your resume (or letter of application) you could write:

“Well known in classes at Cobram Secondary College for my common sense approach to tasks and commitment to getting the job done, I can be relied upon to work without supervision”.

See how you are then telling the employers what they want to hear? You have also placed your skill in a real life situation (in class at school) – and if you have asked a teacher to be your referee to back you up on this statement – even better!
